Otoplasty/Ear Plastic Surgery Bellevue & Seattle

Lose the self-consciousness you have about your Ears. Otoplasty is the safe and simple procedure that can be your answer.

Have people ever made comment about your ears when you were a kid? These memories stay with us for a very long time. These little things can affect the way we feel about ourselves, especially our confidence. You don't have to live with feeling self-conscious about your ears. With otoplasty, you can change the appearance of your ears and feel more confident.

Prominent protruding large ears can be stressful for many people. During the summer, people like to wear their hair up or cut their hair short. That’s when the prominent ears become more of an issue. You can have your ears pinned back and be done under very light sedation. You can avoid all the risks of traditional procedures in which you are completely asleep.

Otoplasty is any procedure involving the reshaping or reconstruction of the ear. It could be the total reconstruction of a child’s ear when no ear is present or a minor correction of a torn earlobe from an earring mishap.

Types of Otoplasty

Microtia repair is a procedure for a congenital deformity where parts or the entire ear is missing. The two main approaches involve the use of one’s own cartilage or implants. Microtia is often employed at a very early age (as early as five when the ears reach near adult size and shape).

Rib cartilage is preferred over other cartilage sources for major microtia repair with medpor the favored implant for its ability to be incorporated into the patient’s tissues. Microtia is also employed for adults that were not able to fix their ears at an early age.

Torn earlobes are a common occurrence for earring injuries. The goal is to excise the hole and surgically close it. You can often re-pierce the ears in three to six months. There are more complicated ways to fix the earlobes but most of those options are less than optimal. This surgery is often done under local anesthesia.

The correction and reconstruction of gauged ear lobes often require flaps of earlobe tissue that are rearranged to reconstruct the earlobes. Re-piercing of the earlobes can occur three to six months depending on the healing.

Prominent ears require treatment of the base or concha of the ears and reshaping of the anti-helix of the superior part of the ear. Other techniques can be incorporated to bring the earlobes and superior base of the ear closer to the head. Most incisions are situated behind the ears. The earliest age considered for the procedure is age five.

Otoplasty revision and correction of previous otoplasties are more difficult and require the knowledge of all aspects of otoplasty so the surgeon can adjust varying presentations of less than perfect ears from previous surgeries.

You don’t want to over correct and get a flat appearance, a less than optimal outcome. The overcorrected ear can be very difficult to change and treat. That’s why doing it right the first time is really important.

The surgery is done through an incision in the back of the ear. Scarring is not a big issue. The ears are pinned back at the base of the ear to allow it to come closer to your head. A prominent ears or protruding ears can be because of a lack of bend of the antihelix. If this is the case, we bend the antihelix and cartilage using sutures for the right bend and medialization.
